What is a skip permit?
If you want to put a skip on the public highway, you need a skip hire permit from your local council. This must be organised before the skip is delivered. Skip permits cost extra and take several days to arrange.
What is a CPZ suspension fee?
A controlled parking zone (CPZ) is part of the road where parking is restricted: for example a residents’ parking bay, a pay and display bay, or double yellow lines. CPZs apply to skips so, if you plan to put a skip in a CPZ, you need a suspension in addition to the skip permit which adds to the cost of skip hire. Your skip hire company will usually be able to sort it out for you.
How much weight can I put into a skip?
The weight restrictions for skips are rarely a problem for domestic users because they don’t tend to fill skips with heavy waste like soil or rubble. Unless you are hiring a skip bigger than 8 cubic yards and filling it up with soil or rubble, it is unlikely to be a problem.
How high can I load a skip?
Most skips have ‘Level Loads only’ written on the side. You should never fill the skip above the line or above its sides. If you exceed it the skip lorry driver may refuse to collect it or ask you to empty out the extra waste. Overloaded skips are dangerous to transport.
