What can you put in a skip?
It is easier to list what cannot be put in a skip. Here are some common items that cannot be put in a skip:
- Asbestos
- Batteries
- Clinical or medical waste
- Electrical appliances
- Fluorescent tubes
- Fridges and freezers
- Air conditioning units
- Gas canisters or gas bottles
- Hazardous or toxic materials
- Liquid
- Oil, petrol or diesel
- Paint tins
- Plasterboard
- Tyres
- Televisions or computer screens
If any prohibited items are found when your skip is emptied you will be charged extra and/or the restricted items will be returned to you. Keep an eye on your skip if it is situated in a public area as people may put their own rubbish into your skip. If this happens, you are responsible for whatever is in your skip.
Skip size – what size should you hire?
The size of skip you need of course depends on the amount of waste you have and the size of the area you will put the skip. Larger skips are cheaper per cubic metre of waste, but if you do not have enough waste to fill it you will be overpaying. Bear in mind that most councils will not allow skips bigger than 8 yards on the public highway.
Access requirements for the skip lorry
Skips are delivered on large lorries – wider than a car. You must make sure there is enough room for the lorry to access wherever you want the skip to go. If access is narrow, check with the skip hire company that the lorry will fit.
