If you are generating any construction or demolition waste, then you have a duty of care to dispose of it lawfully with a registered waste carrier. Here is our guide to builders waste…
What is classified as builders waste?
Waste is any material that you have no further use for and need to be removed.
Construction waste includes
- plasterboard, wood, soil and rubble
- offcuts and shavings
- Hazardous waste – such as oil, batteries and lightbulbs
How should I move my waste?
A waste carrier or waste contractor can arrange the movement of your waste. If you intend to move it yourself, then you have got to be registered as a waste carrier or you might be breaking the law. Every waste stream has its own dedicated requirements for how it is transported and will need to be managed separately.
What is my duty of care?
Since 1990 it has been the responsibility of any business to manage any waste that it produces and ensure that it is disposed of safely and responsibly.
What is Hazardous Waste?
If you produce hazardous waste then it has to be removed in compliance with the Carriage of Dangerous Goods regulations: you can never mix hazardous with non-hazardous waste.
When does the duty of care apply?
The duty of care starts as soon as you produce waste and it continues even after you have passed it on to a carrier. You are responsible for it until it is finally disposed of.
