Fly tippers in Kent were caught red handed after dumping rubbish on a country road when their Mercedes Sprinter can got stuck in the mud.

The vehicle was found on a country lane near Maidstone on Boxing Day. Police questioned two men they found at the scene, then seized the vehicle after discovering it had no road tax. The two men are likely to face large fines for their actions.
PC Ian Loft, of Kent Police, said: “A van that was used to fly-tip household waste in an area near Maidstone was seized. The Mercedes Sprinter was confiscated after officers attended at Pendenden Heath on Boxing Day. We were called by a member of the public to report a van stuck in mud after rubbish including old toys and children’s scooters were found dumped in a wooded area. Two men were questioned at the scene. The vehicle was found to have no road tax and was seized. The matter has been referred to Maidstone Borough Council which has responsibility for fly-tipping.
Residents need to be vigilant when they pay people to dispose of rubbish, such as rubble and building materials. Check for a valid waste carrier licence. Neither of these men had a licence, which ultimately means that anyone who employed them could also face a financial penalty.”

You can report an incident of fly-tipping to your local council. If the incident is in progress, then do not approach the suspects: contact the police immediately on 999. You can also report large scale fly-tipping to the Environment Agency which has the power to investigate.
