Fly tipping is growing in the UK, and the pandemic in 2020 only served to make the issue worse. As recycling centres and tips closed down and locked-in citizens made the most of their time by doing home clear-outs, many people had difficulties finding somewhere to take their waste.
Fly Tipping In Lockdown Reached Record Highs
The increase did not go unnoticed, but is it all down to an increased number of fly-tipping incidents or an increased number of reports? The government has said that at least some of the increase in reported incidents in the country over the last year is down to better recording.
In order to answer the question, researchers have gathered all of the social reporting tweets from 2019 and 2020 and analysed them. They then compared this year with 2018 and 2019 to see what impact reporting may have on reported fly-tipping incidents. The data was compared to the number of incidents reported to the authorities to estimate what the official figure was likely to be, as well as the value of the fines that would be generated.
In the North West:
- There were 258 fly-tipping tweets compared to 189 in the previous year – an increase of 37 per cent.
- 152,983 reports of fly-tipping were made to the authorities, a whopping increase of more than 40,000 incidents when compared to the previous figure of 112,069
- The number of fines issued also increased by over £60,000. In 2018/19 the total of all fly tipping fines that were issued added up to £166,789 but in 2019/20 the total had gone up to £227,680.
