Skip hire is designed to offer an alternative to taking waste to a landfill site. However, skip hire isn’t suitable for the disposal of hazardous materials. Some items can pose a threat to health or the environment. A skip loaded with hazardous materials can put our drivers at risk of injuring themselves, and you could be fined by the Environment Agency for unlawful waste disposal.
Why Can’t Hazardous Waste Go In Skips?
Although you may think it is businesses that produce hazardous waste, domestic projects can do so too! Hazardous waste is usually easy to identify and needs to be dealt with separately from ordinary waste. To dispose of your hazardous waste, you can either:
- Take it to be recycled at the local recycling centre facility yourself; or
- can arrange for an expert to collect the waste from your premises.
A recycling centre will have facilities dedicated to handling car batteries, domestic chemicals and electrical waste, as well as household appliances, tyres and sometimes even asbestos. If in doubt, call us at Martlands Waste Management: we are the experts.
What can’t go in skips?
As well as the obvious things like asbestos and batteries, the following types of waste cannot be combined with other waste in a skip:
- Plasterboard
- Tyres
- Electricals
- Timber
- Metals
- Recyclable waste such as cardboard and paper
