Every year, three million fridges are bought in the UK – and almost as many are thrown away. You cannot just throw a fridge in a skip, though, so here is our guide to disposing of a refrigerator responsibly.
How to Dispose of a Fridge Responsibly
The average lifespan of a fridge is estimated as 11 years, but many remain in use for 20 years or more. Many substances inside fridges are harmful to the environment if they are disposed of incorrectly, especially for older models. So how can you dispose of them safely?
Donate or Sell
If your old fridge is still in working order, you could give it away to a friend or family member. Many websites are dedicated to reusing appliances. You could also sell it through the local paper, Facebook, on Gumtree.
Take to the Tip
If you have suitable transport, you can take your old fridge to the civic amenity site for disposal. Do check that your tip site accepts fridges: not all of them do.
Electrical Retailer
If you have bought a new fridge, your retailer should offer a service to take away the old one when the new one is delivered. There will be a charge for this service.
Local Authority Collection
Your local council is obliged to provide a collection service for bulky items. Councils don’t charge much for this but response times are slow and you need to move the fridge outside for collection.
Waste Collection Company
A professional waste collection company will be able to take away a fridge to be recycled but you must not put it in a skip.
