How to Dispose of Asbestos

“Asbestos” – the mere mention of the word will strike fear into a homeowner’s heart. If you discover asbestos in your property, getting rid of safely it is relatively easy once you know what you’re doing.

How to Dispose of Asbestos

Asbestos was banned for health reasons in the UK back in 1999. Anything that was built after that date is unlikely to contain asbestos.  If you are carrying out home improvement work or if you buy a property that was built before 2000 there is a chance it will contain some asbestos.

If you find asbestos then the best thing to do is to employ an asbestos removal specialist who has appropriate training and equipment, If you decide to move asbestos yourself, you must handle it with extreme care. The HSE asbestos essentials task sheet has advice on this. You should wear gloves, dust mask and goggles. The asbestos must be placed into thick plastic bags – double bagged. Avoid breaking it up into smaller pieces, as this will create asbestos dust which is what is dangerous.  Asbestos is fairly safe until it is broken. If you do need to break it, or if it happens accidentally, you must spray water on it to reduce dust particles in the air.

If you rent, speak to your landlord: it is their responsibility to manage asbestos – not yours.

Can you dispose of asbestos at the council tip?

Some council tips won’t allow you to dispose of asbestos. Some councils do have tips that accept it, with limits on how much you’re allowed to take.  To check, go to https://www.gov.uk/asbestos-in-home.

Council asbestos collection service

Most local councils have an asbestos collection service, which can be cheaper than using a private service. The downsides are there is a limit on how much will be taken and you will have to wait for a suitable collection time.

Specialist asbestos removal contractor

Using a specialist contractor will be faster but more expensive than the council’s service. Private contractors can often do a collection within days.
