A £540 fine has been handed out by a Glasgow Court to the representative of a haulage company after they knowingly caused controlled waste to be deposited on the site of a former power plant without having a waste management licence that authorised them to do so. As well as the fine, the owners of the land were granted £11,000 as compensation for the illegal deposition of controlled waste.
Illegal Deposition Of Controlled Waste
Every business owner has a duty of care on them under the waste regulations to ensure that their waste is stored, transported, collected and disposed of lawfully. If you choose an unlicensed carrier, then you will be the one who is prosecuted if the waste ends up being dumped (or fly-tipped) on somebody else’s land. Large fines and even imprisonment can ensue, so make sure to always use a licensed waste carrier and ask for paperwork every time waste is collected.
Fly tipping is illegal
Fly-tipping is the most common crime caused by a lack of awareness of the Waste Duty of Care. In 2014/15, the total number of fly-tipping incidents in England alone rose by 11 percent to 900,000. It costs local authorities more than £50m a year to clean up all of the mess – and this all comes out of general taxation to we all end up paying for it! Commercial waste is the second largest component of all fly-tipping crimes. It rose by 18% over the same period.
