It’s a cliche of skip hire that skips always end up with a mattress sticking out of the top, but is that the best way to dispose of an old mattress? Read our mattress disposal guide for more info…
Mattress Disposal Guide
If your mattress is ready to be replaced, how can you get rid of it?
1. Skip hire
If you’ve hired a skip, it’s worth asking the skip hire provider if they can take the old mattress. Mattress disposal that prevents it from filling the skip and even if there is an extra fee to pay it’s not usually very much.
2. Collection by council
Local authorities can collect bulky items like mattresses. There’s a small fee and a limit to how many times a year they will collect.
3. Give it away
Believe it or not, someone else might be looking for a mattress. This is especially true when you replace your mattress sooner than seven years, as many people have mattresses over 10 years old.
If your mattress is in relatively good condition, ask friends and family to see if someone will take it off your hands.
4. Take it to the tip
Driving to the tip to dump a mattress at the tip is free. But the time you spend getting it there and the effort to fit it in a suitable vehicle might make it a false economy.
Mattress recycling is very effective, but still quite rare. A good recycling facility can extract the metal springs and use the padding for something like carpet underlay.
95% of the mass of a mattress can be recycled but many end up being fly-tipped or in landfills. If you want to make sure that yours is not amongst them, be sure to recycle your mattress recycler or ask your skip hire provider to dispose of it safely.
