Public Urged Not To Dispose Of PPE In Recycling

The Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) has urged people not to put Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) into their recycling and make sure that it is disposed of properly.

Public Urged not to Dispose of PPE in Recycling

The CPI says people have been disposing of used Personal Protective Equipment with their household recycling. Used PPE that is put in with recycling will place essential frontline workers at risk during the Coronavirus health crisis because people who collect, sort and handle waste material will potentially be exposed to the Covid-19 bug. Putting the health of key workers at risk in this way will undermine the good work and sacrifice that the majority of the public are making as the nation fights to overcome Covid-19

PPE can not be recycled, it must be treated in the same way as any other domestic medical waste, for example, soiled hygiene products such as pads and nappies. It should be separately double-bagged and disposed of along with the general waste.

Simon Weston, The Director of Raw Materials for the Confederation of Paper Industries, said: “In recent weeks, we have received several disturbing reports and photographs of PPE, such as discarded masks and gloves within household collections of paper for recycling.

“CPI welcomes the continued support of the public in recycling their household material, but PPE must not be recycled along with paper and cardboard. It is absolutely vital that this material is disposed of in the proper way, along with general refuse.

“People doing so are risking the health of key workers and undermiding the good work and sacrifice that workers and the general public have made and continue to make as we try to overcome Covid-19.”
