Here are some tips on how to save money when you need to dispose of bulky waste as part of a New Year clear out.
Start Your New Year Clear Out Early
Before you throw rubbish away, it is worth asking if it could be reused by someone else. If an item is in decent condition, clean and still working, the answer is usually ‘yes’. If you live somewhere that has good pedestrian footfall, the easiest solution is to leave it outside your house with a sticker on it saying ‘TAKE ME’. Alternatively, you can donate to charity: many will even collect it.
Take it to your council tip
Assuming you have access to some form of vehicle, then loading up your waste and taking it to the local tip is the cheapest way to dispose of it. Tips won’t usually charge to take your waste as long as you can prove you live locally and don’t arrive in a commercial vehicle.
Use the bulky waste collection service
Every council is obliged to provide its residents with a home collection service for bulky items that won’t fit in the bin. The service is usually restricted to things like furniture, appliances (e.g. fridges) and mattresses and will exclude DIY waste.
Break down waste before it’s collected
Unless the waste you have is extremely heavy, skip hire companies charge by volume. So if you’ve got enough time, dismantle things to use less skip space.
Share the problem with a neighbour
Like most things, bulk buying is cheaper. Skip hire is no different. If you only have half a skip’s worth of waste, it will be cost-effective to join up with a neighbour so you can split the cost.
