Old TVs are counted as hazardous waste, and so must be disposed of responsibly. Rather than goin to landfill, TVs need special attention to protect the planet. There are ways to dispose of a TV, but the first thing to ask is if it is still in working order.

If the old TV works, don’t throw it away – someone may still find it useful.

Donation is an option that prevents old TVs turning into waste. Ask if any family or friends are in need of a TV or see if a charity will take it off your hands.
Retailer Exchange
Many electrical retailers now offer the chance to exchange an old TV for a newer model. This is part of their legal recycling obligations.

Of course, you could try selling your old TV –through word of mouth or online.

Of the TV isn’t fit for any the above, it is waste. Unfortunately, you can’t put a TV into a skip because it’s hazardous waste and so requires special care.

Most councils offer a collection service for electrical items. You may find yourself on a long waiting list though.

Contacting your local council operated recycling centre is a cost-effective option. Not all centres accept old TVs, so call them to make sure before travelling.
