When made our guidelines for what can go in our skips, we thought about the weirdest things we have found in skips.
1) A caravan
That’s right, a caravan was found in a skip! A caravan is not just far too big for a skip, it is made up of hazardous materials that you can’t dispose of in a regular skip. So, think twice before throwing away your caravan!
2) A motorbike
Another strange item found in a skip was a fully functioning motorbike! A restored 1939 Vincent HRD Series-A Rapide motorcycle to be precise. Not only is this a waste of money, but it’s also forbidden to load a skip with many of the materials in a motorbike. Tyres, for example, cannot be put into any skip – they must be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.
3) Cash
Not many of us would throw it away but there have been cases of skips being filled with cash! In 2018, a skip hire company employee found a bag with £7,000 in it.
4) Weapons
Another unique item found in a skip that will not be accepted by any skip hire company is a weapon of any form – whether it is broken or fully functioning.
5) Asbestos
Asbestos comes in three types: Chrysotile, amosite and crocidolite, (or white, brown and blue). Asbestos is extremely dangerous, usually only found in buildings that were built before the year 2000 (when it was banned). Up to 5,000 workers are still killed by asbestos every year, which is why it must never be thrown in a skip. Asbestos requires specialist handling and disposal and should never go anywhere near skips.
