If someone fly tips on land that belongs to, it is incredibly frustrating. Unfortunately, the responsibility for cleaning it up falls to the landowner.

What To Do if Someone Fly Tips on Your Land

Fly-tipping is against the law, and people can be prosecuted and fined for committing fly-tipping offences – if the police are able to identify them.

What is fly-tipping?

Fly-tipping is when waste is dumped on unauthorised land. It could be furniture, construction waste, hazardous materials, electrical items, or indeed almost anything at all! Some people have even fly-tipped animals onto people’s private land.

What are the consequences of fly-tipping?

Fly-tipping is a criminal offence and can land the tipper a fine of up to £50,000. In 2018/19, English local authorities dealt with over a million (1,072,000) fly-tipping incidents; an increase of 8% from the figures in 2017/2018.

What to do if someone fly-tips on your land

If someone has fly-tipped on your land, the National Fly-Tipping Prevention Group recommend that you get in touch with the Environment Agency – they investigate some incidents.

Be cautious

Before approaching waste on your land, be extremely careful. It could be hazardous. If you catch someone fly-tipping, you should not approach them. Call 999.

Record the incident

It is essential to make a note of the date, time and place where the fly-tipping happened. Also, take some photographs of the waste.

Keep records of any clearance and disposal costs you incur, as you may be able to be reimbursed in the future.

Don’t Fly Tip The Waste Yourself

You cannot just remove the waste and put it elsewhere. It is essential to always use a registered waste carrier who will dispose of it safely and lawfully. A certified waste carrier provides you with documentation when they take away the waste and can prove they are also licensed to deal with any hazardous waste.
