The Christmas shutdown brings the same rhythm to West Lancashire’s building sites every December. The last pours and final fixes get squeezed in, and the vans empty of tools. Then, by the third week of the month, the trade takes its only proper break of the year. Before that happens, though, the sites themselves need putting to bed. The state a site is left in over Christmas says a lot about the firm that runs it. We have cleared sites ahead of the break for generations, and our page on builders skip hire for construction and renovation waste covers the service all year. This article is about the fortnight when everyone wants it at once.

Why sites should never sit full over the Christmas shutdown
A site left full of waste over the break is a liability under a tarpaulin. Two unattended weeks give the weather time to soak and scatter whatever was left lying. As a result, January’s first morning becomes a clean-up instead of a restart.
Idle sites also attract the wrong attention. An obviously empty plot with waste on show invites fly-tipping. Once someone else’s rubbish lands on your site, the mess and the cost belong to whoever controls the land. Our guide on fly tipping on private land and what West Lancashire landowners need to know explains how fast that problem grows.
Insurers take the same dim view of combustible waste stacked against a building through the darkest fortnight of the year. In short, clearing the site before the break is not just housekeeping. It is the cheapest risk management the project will ever buy.
There is a commercial angle too. In December, clients drive past their own projects with family in the car. A site that looks abandoned tells a story no builder wants told. Often, the sites that win the next job are the ones that looked professional standing still.
The last exchange of the year books up first
Here is the practical truth from our side of the phone. The final ten working days before Christmas are among our busiest of the year for trade collections. Every firm in the county has the same idea at the same time.
The sites that finish the year clean booked the final exchange as soon as the shutdown date went in the diary. They did not ring on the last Friday. So if your firm breaks up on a known date, work backwards from it. Book the last 8 tonne builders skip collection for the day after the final productive work, and tell us early.
For larger sites with a season’s build-up, a single 20 yard roll on roll off skip often clears the lot in one lift. By contrast, three separate exchanges might not fit into December at all.
What to clear and what can wait
Not everything needs to leave before the break. Knowing the difference keeps the last week sane.
Clear loose mixed waste, offcuts, packaging and anything the wind can move first. Otherwise, it ends up in the neighbours’ hedges by New Year. Secure part-used materials worth money inside, or take them back to the yard.
Hardcore and soil can stay on site over winter if you stack them tidily away from working areas. Weather does them no harm, and January groundworks may need them. The judgement call is anything combustible or anything that looks like rubbish from the road.
Our longest-standing trade customers use a simple rule. If you would not want a client walking the site on Boxing Day, it is not clear enough.
Paperwork closes the year too
December is also the time to tidy up the year’s waste paperwork. Firms that leave it loose regret it at audit time. Every load that leaves a site needs a transfer note. As a licensed carrier, we provide one with every collection, so your file completes itself.
The waste duty of care code of practice sets out what businesses must keep. Our skip hire duty of care guide explains it in plain terms.
Ending the year with a clear site and complete paperwork means January starts with building, not admin. Small firms feel this most. A sole trader’s January is short enough without hunting for last year’s transfer notes.
Across every trade town we serve
The shutdown rush runs right across our area, from housing sites around Leyland to the renovation trade around Chorley. We plan our rounds for it, with extra trade collections in the final fortnight. Our drivers also know which sites break up when.
Every load returns to our own recycling centre in Burscough for sorting, as our Environmental & Recycling page explains. So the year’s last loads get the same care as its first.
Is your Christmas shutdown date set? Then set your site clearance with it. Call our team on 01704 779345 or book the year’s last collection through our contact page. Start January on a clean site, with nothing waiting under a tarpaulin.
