A Skip That’s Good Enough to Eat!
An ice cream kiosk made from a skip has been turning heads in London. Named the Fandangoe SKIP, the container was created by print artist Fandangoe Kid in collaboration with SKIP Gallery, a duo who use skips to deliver thought-provoking artwork.
In conjunction with The Loss Project, the skip-based kiosk handed out free ice creams and signposted visitors to workshops supporting mental health. The Fandangoe SKIP was revealed at the Greenwich Peninsula before moving to Canary Wharf and then across the Atlantic to New York.
The amazing creation was made out of a real skip with a floating ‘skip style’ canopy made of lightweight, sustainable materials on top.
It was constructed by CAUKIN Studio, a social enterprise that creates impact through interesting architecture.
Fandangoe Kid makes large-scale public artworks that smash taboos around mental health, grief, loss, trauma and gender. She uses film, fashion and workshops to explore the human experience. Last summer she made The Fandangoe Whip, an ice cream van which highlighted support for mental health.
The skip project that is good enough to eat is the latest development from Lee Baker and Catherine Borowski. The artistic pair launched SKIP Gallery after coming up with the idea of using skips – first to showcase art and eventually as artworks themselves, delivering diverse messages about loss, waste, consumerism, fashion and mental health.
Their skips – which are created in collaboration with contemporary artists – pop up in unexpected places, and are hired from local waste companies before being temporarily repurposed to become art.
