The fortnight after Christmas leaves most homes with more waste than they started the holidays with, from flattened boxes and torn wrapping to packaging, broken decorations and whatever got swapped out in the January sales. Clearing it is one of the easiest ways to start the year with the house back in order, and doing it properly keeps as much as possible out of landfill. We have cleared post-Christmas waste for local families through more than a hundred New Years, and a well-sized skip from our Ormskirk skip hire team takes the work out of it.
Festive waste is a volume job, not a weight one
This is the part most people get wrong, because the usual advice about not underestimating weight works the other way round in January. A New Year clear-out is mostly cardboard, wrapping, packaging and soft, bulky bits, which fill a skip by space long before they trouble the weight limit. That means you can size up with confidence rather than worrying about a heavy load, since it is volume you are paying for, not tonnage. A 4 tonne midi skip usually swallows a whole household’s festive leftovers with room to spare, and breaking boxes down flat before they go in roughly doubles what you will fit. If a tired sofa or mattress is going in the same clear-out our guide on choosing the right skip size helps you judge whether to step up.
Sorting the recyclable bulk before it reaches the skip
Because so much of a festive clear-out is recyclable, a quick sort as you go pays off twice over. Cardboard boxes, glass bottles and jars, drink cans and clean paper all have a use beyond landfill, and separating them before they hit the skip both keeps the recoverable material clean and frees up skip space for the things that have to go. It is a small habit that makes the whole job quicker and cheaper, and it carries on usefully well past January.
Real trees and the West Lancashire collection
Real trees are the one festive item a skip is not the answer for. They are fully compostable and chip down into good mulch, so they should never sit in general waste, and West Lancashire Borough Council runs a January tree collection and drop-off arrangement worth checking before the cut-off. For the bulkier January problems, though, the old sofa, the worn mattress, the furniture cleared to make space for new pieces, a skip is exactly the right tool, and those swap-outs are why the first couple of weeks of the year are some of our busiest.
What happens to your clear-out once it leaves
When the skip comes back it goes to our own recycling centre rather than straight to landfill. Card, glass, metal and timber are sorted for recycling, garden material is composted, and we keep as much in use as we can, which is part of how a family business that has served the area for generations holds both costs and waste down. You can read more about that work on our recycling and environmental work page.
