What a waste transfer note must include
Notes vary in design. However, every one must contain at least the following:
- A description of the waste.
- The European Waste Catalogue (EWC) codes for the waste.
- How the waste was contained.
- The names and addresses of both parties, meaning you and the carrier.
- The place, date and time of the transfer.
- The quantity of waste.
- The waste carrier licence number.
Using an unlicensed carrier is a serious risk. If the waste is later fly-tipped and you cannot produce a transfer note when asked, you could face prosecution.
Why waste transfer notes matter
Notes do more than protect you from fines. A properly completed note can also help you cut costs and recycle more. That is because it records useful details such as the weight, volume and make-up of each load.
For businesses, comparing notes with disposal invoices shows your average cost per load. Looking at the material data can also reveal waste you could separate into cheaper collections. In short, good paperwork pays for itself.
