Turning a garage into a home gym sounds like a weekend of painting and a rubber floor. It is not. The floor is the whole project, because a garage slab is laid to fall towards the door and gym equipment needs level ground that will take a dropped weight. Before anything structural happens, the garage has to come out. If the slab comes out, that is where the weight of the whole job sits. Broken concrete is one of the densest materials we carry and it will reach a skip’s limit at a fraction of the volume. Load it low, spread it flat, and do not be tempted to fill the rest with more of the same.

The door, the insulation and the damp work
The up and over door and its steel frame come out as one heavy awkward unit and they are worth keeping to one side for metal recovery rather than burying in the middle of the skip. The blockwork infill that replaces it produces offcuts and mortar waste, and the insulation and plasterboard that follow are bulky and light.
Damp is the thing that catches people on garage conversions along this coast. A garage was never built to habitable standard and the walls are often single skin with no membrane under the slab. Sorting that properly at the strip out stage produces more waste than expected, but it is far cheaper than discovering it once the rubber matting is down and the equipment is in.

Most properties here have a drive that will take a skip, which is the simplest arrangement and needs no permission from anybody.
