We all know the fly-tipping is against the law. How do you report fly-tipping when you see it?
How To Report Fly-Tipping
You can report an incident of fly-tipping to your Local Council to investigate.
What do I do if I see someone fly-tipping?
Eyewitnesses are really important if action is going to be taken against criminals who fly-tip, so it is really important to report any incident that you see to the authorities as soon as possible. Don’t put yourself in danger, for example by approaching anyone who is dumping waste; they are often organised criminals, who may be involved in many other criminal activities, and so they are unlikely to respond well if they are challenged. If you can observe them safely, from a distance, then the more information you can provide, the better the chances of them being successfully investigated.
Information that is useful to the authorities includes:
- The time and date of the incident;
- The exact location;
- A description of the person(s) dumping waste;
- A description of any vehicle(s) involved, including their registration numbers;
- A description of the waste that was dumped;
- Photographs are very useful, but only if you can obtain them safely.
Any information supplied in connection to fly-tipping will be in the strictest confidence in accordance with the Data Protection Act. If you make any notes, then keep them, even if they are just scribbles on the back of an envelope. The actual notes taken at the time can be very valuable evidence.
Do not go through the waste yourself to find evidence; there may be hazardous items hidden amongst it. Council staff will carry out a full examination as part of their investigation.
