Robert Jenrick, the Secretary for Housing, Communities and Local Government says that household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs) will be reopened in an “organised” way in the coming weeks.
Councils Plan For Reopening of Recycling Centres
Mr Jenrick stated in the house of commons: “I am asking councils to plan the organised reopening of household waste sites. I expect this to be actioned in the coming weeks and will be publishing guidance shortly.”
Mr Jenrick praised waste workers for “a fantastic job” in keeping the majority of recycling and waste collections going during the coronavirus pandemic.
HWRCs
Mr Jenrick’s statement follows a huge increase in reports of fly-tipping most likely due to the waste services provided by councils being reduced during the COVID-19 crisis. There have been calls for local recycling centres to be opened as a priority. Defra, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is reported to have begun a consultation with local authorities as to whether this is possible.
The Department issued a statement to encourage councils to keep their HWRCs open so that bulky waste can be disposed of, but only if they could adhere to social distancing guidelines on site. As it is, 92% of household waste recycling centres remain closed, with those that are open having a high level of disruption”.
A recent survey found that the number of councils that have had to do fly-tipping clearance collections has increased from 61% to 66% after a 300% rise in reporting fly-tipping.
