For a business generating waste continuously rather than in one burst, a builders skip stops making sense fairly quickly. A roll on roll off skip changes the arithmetic entirely, but only where the site can take one, and a good proportion of the units around this part of the docks cannot. What a roll on roll off container actually needs from a site
These are long containers delivered on a hook lift vehicle, and the mechanics of putting one down and picking one up dictate everything. The container slides off the back of the lorry and slides back on, which means the vehicle needs a clear straight run considerably longer than the container itself.
The surface has to be hardstanding. Concrete or well laid tarmac, level, and capable of taking a loaded container along with the vehicle that lifts it. Compacted hardcore in a yard will sometimes do at the right time of year and will not do in February, when everything around here holds water.
Overhead clearance is the one that stops jobs most often. The container tilts as it comes off and goes back on, so the height needed during the lift is considerably more than the height of the container standing still. Canopies, first floor loading doors, cables and low signage all matter.
Gradient matters too. A yard that slopes noticeably makes the lift harder and, on a wet February morning, can make it unsafe. Our drivers will tell you plainly if a yard is marginal rather than attempting it and damaging your surface.
Where the volume really pays
The right use for these containers is high volume, low density waste. Packaging, pallets, plasterboard offcuts on a fit out, insulation, shop fittings, general commercial waste, timber. Anything bulky and light, where the volume is the problem and the weight never will be.

What these are not for is heavy inert waste. The duty of care obligations that come with commercial waste
This is where business waste differs from household waste and where a surprising number of small firms are exposed without realising it. Once you are producing waste as a business, you carry a legal duty of care over it, and that duty does not end when the container leaves your yard.
In practice it means three things. You use a registered waste carrier. You get and keep a waste transfer note for every collection. And you take reasonable steps to know that the waste is going somewhere it should. Our skip hire duty of care guide explains what that documentation should look like.
The reason it matters commercially rather than just legally is that if waste traceable to your business turns up somewhere it should not be, the enquiry comes to you, and the paperwork is what ends it. We are a licensed waste carrier and site operator and the documentation comes as standard.
Running a container efficiently
The most common inefficiency we see is containers going out half empty because nobody has broken anything down. Pallets stacked whole, boxes not flattened, shop fittings thrown in at angles. On a volume based container that is money going out of the gate.
Fifteen minutes with a pallet breaker and a knife at the end of each day will noticeably reduce how often you need an exchange. It also makes the container safer to work around, because material stacked loosely shifts.
Agree an exchange rhythm with us rather than ringing when it is already overflowing. Most yards settle into a predictable pattern within a month, and once we know yours we can plan around it.
The other thing worth agreeing early is where the container sits relative to your own operation. A container placed for the convenience of the delivery vehicle rather than the people filling it costs a business far more in walking time over six months than any hire charge. Somewhere close to the point where the waste is actually produced, on ground that will take it all year rather than just in summer, and clear of the routes your own vehicles need. It sounds obvious and it is the thing most often got wrong, usually because the first container went wherever there happened to be space on the day.
When a smaller container is the better answer
