January is when the phone starts ringing about chimney breasts. Somebody has booked a woodburner installation for February, the old tiled surround has to come out first, and nobody has thought about where the rubble goes. What actually comes out of a chimney breast
People picture a fireplace as the bit they can see, which is a surround, a hearth and a grate. The reality is heavier than that. Gas fires are the other one. If there is a live or capped gas supply into the opening, it needs a registered engineer to disconnect it properly before anything is pulled out. We will not take a gas fire with the supply still attached, and no reputable operator would.
