Almost everybody who rings us about domestic skip hire asks the same question first, which is what size they need, and almost everybody underestimates it. Not because they are careless, but because a room looks smaller than its contents and a loft looks smaller than either. After a century of loading household clearances across West Lancashire we can tell you roughly what each job produces before you have started it.
What Counts as a Domestic Job
Domestic waste is what your own household generates in and around your own home. A loft being emptied, a bedroom stripped back, a garage that has quietly filled since you moved in, a garden cut back hard, the old bathroom coming out. All of that is domestic, and it is the bulk of what we carry.
One thing does change the category, and it catches people out. If you pay a tradesman to do the work and he takes the waste away with him, that waste has become his commercial responsibility rather than your domestic one, and different paperwork applies. If the skip is on your drive in your name and you are filling it yourself, you are domestic even when a builder is working on the house. Our page on domestic versus commercial skip hire covers where that line falls if your situation sits somewhere between the two.
Sizing by the Job Rather Than by Guess
The useful way to think about domestic skip hire is by what the job actually produces, not by how big the room feels.
A single bedroom stripped to the walls, or a loft that has been used as storage for a decade, will usually fill a midi container. So will a modest garden clear-out or a bathroom rip-out. For those a 4 tonne midi skip is the sensible starting point and it sits comfortably on most driveways.
A whole garage, a kitchen coming out, a full house being cleared after a move, or a garden and garage tackled in the same fortnight will beat that. An 8 tonne builders skip handles those without the second booking people so often end up making. Our skip sizes page gives the real dimensions.
The pattern in the numbers is simple. Households that go one size up almost never regret it. Households that go one size down ring us again within the week.
Where the Container Goes
Most domestic skip hire sits on a driveway, and that is much the easier option. No permit is needed, you can start filling the moment it lands, and there is no time pressure from the council. Our page on driveway skip hire covers what we need to know about access and surface before delivery.
If there is no drive, or the drive is in use, the container goes on the road and that needs a permit from the local highway authority. For inland Lancashire towns that is Lancashire County Council rather than the borough, which surprises people, and the fee is £42 per 28 days. We arrange it, but tell us early, because the application is the part of a booking most likely to add a day. The detail is in our guide on whether you need a permit to place a skip on the road.
What Cannot Go In
Household clearances turn up more restricted items than any other kind of job, because garages, sheds and lofts are where things go to be forgotten. Paint tins with liquid still in them, old gas bottles, tyres, garden machinery with fuel in the tank, electrical items, and a fridge that was moved out years ago and never dealt with. None of those can travel in a mixed load.
Set them aside as you go rather than finding them at the bottom on collection morning. Our guide to what you can put in a skip covers the full picture, and telling us at the booking stage costs nothing.
The Paperwork Side of Domestic Skip Hire
Householders are exempt from the written waste transfer note that businesses must complete, which leads a lot of people to assume the legal side does not apply to them at all. It does. You still hold a duty to check that whoever takes your waste is registered to do it, and that duty does not end when the lorry leaves your drive.
It takes about two minutes to check a carrier registration on the public register, and our skip hire duty of care guide sets out exactly what you are responsible for and what the warning signs of an unregistered operator look like. Read it before you book from anybody, us included.
What Happens to a Household Load
Everything we collect comes back to our own recycling centre rather than being passed to a third party. Timber, metal, hardcore and green waste are separated there, and what remains is reduced as far as it sensibly can be before anything approaches landfill.
That matters more for household clearances than people expect, because a domestic load is the most mixed material we handle. A garage clear-out contains a bit of everything, and sorting it properly is the difference between recovery and burial. Our environmental and recycling page explains how the site works.
Domestic Skip Hire Across West Lancashire and Merseyside
We cover Ormskirk, Burscough, Southport, Skelmersdale, Chorley, Leyland and the villages between them, and the household pattern holds across all of it. Lofts and garages produce more than anyone expects, gardens fill by volume rather than weight, and the container people first ask for is usually one size too small.
Tell us what is coming out and roughly where the skip can sit, and we will tell you plainly which size fits. Ring our team on 01704 779345 or use our contact page. Five minutes on the phone beats a second booking.
