Start with the waste carrier licence
Anyone who moves waste for money must register with the Environment Agency. Anyone can search the public register online, through the GOV.UK waste carrier registration service. A genuine firm hands over its carrier number without hesitation. Ours is CB/QE5406MT, and we print it on our website for exactly this reason.

If a firm hesitates over its number, quotes someone else’s or tells you not to worry, it has answered your question. Just not in the way it hoped. The check matters most for the cheapest quote on your list. Rock-bottom prices in this trade are often funded by skipping the cost of legal disposal, and the register is where that shows up first.
Ask where the waste physically goes
The carrier licence covers the lorry. The more revealing question is what happens after it leaves your house, and this is where the industry divides.
Some firms tip at third-party transfer stations and cannot tell you much about what happens next. By contrast, firms with their own facilities can answer in detail, because the sorting happens under their own roof.

Ask any firm the same two questions. Where is the waste tipped, and who runs that site? Confident, specific answers are the mark of a company with nothing to hide. Why waste carrier checks protect you personally
This is not just curiosity. The law places a duty of care on the person whose waste it is, and that duty does not end at your gate. If an unregistered operator collects your waste and dumps it in a lane, the trail can lead back to you. In fact, householders have been fined for exactly that.

The questions worth asking on the phone
When you ring around for quotes, three questions sort the field quickly:
Ask for the waste carrier registration number, and note whether it comes back instantly.
Ask where the waste is processed and whether the firm owns the site.
Ask what happens to a specific item in your load, such as old decking, garden soil or a broken wardrobe.
